HONDO PUBLIC LIBRARY
The city of Hondo spent almost 20 years working on a new library for their community. TLR coordinated with a library consultant, architect, city manager and library director to help create a master plan that included a new library building with a large children’s library, teen room, computer center and adult reading room. In addition, the new library included a History reading room, community center with meeting space for over 100 people and a commercial kitchen.
TLR helped the library director raise over $175,000 to fund most of the furnishings needed in the new library and community center.
Initially, the library had 30 days to move out of the old building and into the new library. With construction delays, the library was turned over to the city only 8 days before the official grand opening was scheduled. The city had also sold the former library building so it had to be ready for the new owner the day after the grand opening. The library had 8 days to vacate their old building and set up the new library and community center. With the help of community volunteers, the library staff and many volunteers from the city staff, TLR was able to complete the task. An 8,000 square foot library was emptied, and a 12,500 square foot library and community center was furnished and operational in time for the grand opening. Traffic at the Hondo Library more than doubled immediately and traffic has continued to increase ever since. It took over 20 years, but the city of Hondo has a new library they can truly be proud of.
